Google Ads vs. Meta Ads: One Targets Intent, the Other Targets Interest.
Both can bring a local business real customers — but they work in completely different ways, and picking the wrong one for your industry is the fastest way to waste ad budget. Here's the difference in plain English.
the core difference
Searching vs. Scrolling
Every ad platform answers one question: who sees your ad, and why? Google and Meta answer it in opposite ways.
google ads
Targets intent — people searching right now
Your ad appears when someone types “emergency plumber near me” or“dentist open Saturday” into Google. They already have the problem, they're already looking for someone to solve it — the ad's job is simply to make sure that someone is you.
You're capturing demand that already exists.
meta ads (facebook & instagram)
Targets interest — people who fit the profile
Your ad appears while a local person scrolls Facebook or Instagram — not because they searched for you, but because they fit your customer profile: they live nearby, they're the right age, they engage with related topics. They weren't looking for you in that moment. Now they know you exist.
You're creating demand that didn't exist yet.
when each wins
Which One Fits Your Business?
Google Ads usually wins when…
- →Customers search for your service when they need it — plumbing, towing, an attorney, an emergency dentist.
- →The job is urgent or high-stakes, so people compare and call quickly.
- →You want leads that are already 'hand-raised' — they typed the problem into Google themselves.
- →Your competitors are already buying the top of the search results and getting the calls you're missing.
Meta Ads usually win when…
- →People rarely search for what you offer until they've seen it — medspa treatments, tattoos, home staging, memberships.
- →Your work is visual and photos or before/afters do the selling.
- →You want to fill slower periods by putting an offer in front of thousands of nearby locals.
- →Search volume in your area is small, and you need to create demand rather than wait for it.
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees your ad | People actively searching for your service, right now | People nearby who fit the profile of your customer |
| What it targets | Intent — the words they type into Google | Interest — who they are, where they live, what they engage with |
| Mindset | “I need this — who do I call?” | “Huh, I didn’t know that was an option” |
| Best for | Urgent, high-intent services people already look for | Visual, discovery-driven offers people don’t search for |
| Typical role | Capture existing demand | Create new demand |
or run both
The Honest Answer: It Depends on Your Business
An emergency plumber lives on Google — nobody scrolls Instagram looking for a burst pipe. A medspa can thrive on Meta — nobody searches for a treatment they haven't heard of. And many local businesses do best with both: Meta ads to get known in the area, Google ads to catch people the moment they search.

Common Questions
Which platform is cheaper?+
Meta clicks usually cost less than Google clicks — but a cheap click from someone who wasn't looking for you can be worth less than an expensive click from someone who was. What matters is cost per actual lead, and that depends on your industry and your local market, not the platform's sticker price.
Should I just run both?+
Sometimes, but not always — and usually not on day one. If your budget supports one platform done properly, we'd rather start where your customers already are and add the second channel once the first is producing. Running both on a budget sized for one is how ad spend gets wasted.
Does Leadholics run Google Ads, Meta Ads, or both?+
Either or both, depending on your business. See Google Ads management and Meta Ads management — in every case the campaigns run on your own ad account and point at a site built to convert.
Do I need a new website first?+
If your current site doesn't turn visitors into calls, then yes — ads on either platform just pay to send people to a page that loses them. That's why every Leadholics plan includes the website, hosting, and campaigns as one system.
